The timing matters more than most people realize.
I'm Franny Flynn, and I specialize exclusively in smoothing treatments at Brazilian Blowout Boston in Quincy, MA. With over 10,000 treatments behind me, color timing is something I deal with every single week.
Color and smoothing can absolutely work together. The question isn't whether, it's when. And that answer changes depending on what you're coloring, how you're coloring it, and which smoothing system you're using.
If you're lightening, go first.
Lightening should always come before a smoothing treatment, no exceptions.
Blonding opens the hair and changes its structure. It's more aggressive than most smoothing systems. If you highlight after smoothing, it can strip results both from the surface and from within.
If you're doing highlights, balayage, or anything involving bleach, the order is:
- Lighten first
- Let the hair settle, about 2 weeks
- Then smooth
Lightening always comes before smoothing. Doing it the other way around risks stripping the treatment and over-processing the hair.
If you're doing single-process color.
Root touch-ups, gray coverage, toners, or deeper all-over color can be done before or about two weeks after, depending on timing and preference.
Some people color first and smooth after. Some smooth first and refresh color later. There isn't one universal rule. There is a right plan based on your hair.
How heat-based smoothing interacts with color.
Heat-based smoothing can cause a slight color shift, and whether that's a perk or a problem depends on you.
For some, it's a bonus: a balayage that didn't lift quite enough gets the extra brightness it needed. Highlights look a little lighter and fresher.
For others, it's more noticeable. A rich chocolate brown might come out looking lighter than expected.
"You can color first and enjoy the subtle brightening effect, or wait and refresh tone after smoothing if you want full control over the final shade."
Either way, it's preference-based. We'll talk through which order makes sense for you.
QiQi doesn't shift color.
QiQi uses no flat ironing, so there's no heat-based color shift. Your color stays exactly the same. You can color before or after without worrying about tone changes.
That said, lightening services, highlights, balayage, bleach, should still be done before QiQi, not after. Lightening opens the hair structure and can interfere with the treatment if done afterward.
Can you color and smooth the same day?
Yes. We can perform smoothing treatments the same day as color.
In a perfect world, waiting about two weeks after coloring is ideal. But scheduling doesn't always allow for that, and we know you're busy.
If you have fragile or lightened areas, we adjust how we work on those sections so nothing is over-processed. Read more about smoothing treatments on damaged hair.
The bottom line.
Lightening always comes first. Single-process color can flex before or after. Heat-based smoothing may shift tone slightly. QiQi won't.
The right plan depends on your specific color, your hair's current condition, and which smoothing system makes sense for you. That's exactly what we figure out together before you book.
