Brazilian Blowout Same-Day Washability Customizable

What a Brazilian Blowout is,
and what it is not.

If you've been researching smoothing treatments, you've seen the term thrown around like it means everything and nothing. Straightening. Keratin. Permanent. Temporary. It's none of those things. I'm Franny Flynn, owner of Brazilian Blowout Boston in Quincy, MA. After 10,000+ treatments, here's what I know for certain.

What a Brazilian Blowout

actually is.

It's a coating-based smoothing treatment that lasts 10 - 12 weeks based on customization. The formula creates a protective layer around each strand, smoothing the cuticle and reducing frizz. You can wash it the same day. No downtime. No waiting period.

It doesn't chemically straighten your hair or erase your curl pattern. It doesn't restructure anything permanently. What it does is make your hair more predictable. Blow-drying takes half the time. Styling holds longer. Hair feels smoother and looks polished, even when Boston decides to be 90% humidity.

How it works.

The smoothing formula gets applied to your hair and sealed in with heat. It works on the outside of the strand, not the inside, which is why results fade gradually instead of growing out in a harsh line. Over 10 - 12 weeks, your hair slowly reverts to its natural state.

"Frizz happens when dry hair pulls moisture from the air. The cuticle lifts, the strand swells, and you get that fuzzy halo. Brazilian Blowout smooths the cuticle so your hair stops acting like a sponge on a humid Boston day."

Customization and tradeoffs.

Within a Brazilian Blowout, there are intentional customizations you can make. But those customizations come with tradeoffs.

A lighter treatment keeps more volume, but it fades noticeably by 10 weeks. A heavier treatment lasts closer to 12 weeks and gives you more curl reduction, but you lose volume and your hair sits flatter.

The tradeoff in plain terms

If you hate flatness more than you hate coming back every 10 weeks, go lighter. If you want it to last and don't mind less volume, go heavier. It's about what's most important to you.

Now let's talk curl pattern. Brazilian Blowout is a smoothing treatment, not a straightening treatment. Curl reduction is a side effect, not the main event.

Depending on the strength of your curl pattern and how heavy we go with the application, you'll see different levels of curl softening. Because smoothing is what the treatment is designed to do, we can't predict exactly what will happen to your curl. What we can do: customize the application based on what you're looking for, take detailed notes, and adjust for future treatments.

It is a cumulative treatment. If you want straighter results and have a strong curl pattern, we can take you there, it may just take several regular visits. How many treatments that takes depends on your hair texture and curl pattern.

Who it's for.

Anyone who wants less time styling and fewer bad hair days. We've done this on all hair types, including hair that's been permanently straightened, colored, highlighted, permed, and relaxed.

What it's not.

Most disappointment comes from expectations that were never realistic, or from someone who didn't know what they were doing.

The most common thing we hear: "I had a treatment done and it was gone in two weeks."

That's not how it works when it's done right. If it washed out that fast, the application was rushed. This treatment lasts 10 - 12 weeks based on customization.

It's not a straightening treatment

Curl reduction is a side effect, not the main goal. Heavier applications and regular appointments can create more noticeable curl reduction, but its main intention is to remove frizz and soften curl.

It's not "a keratin treatment"

That's not a regulated term. It's an umbrella term that covers hundreds of different systems that work in completely different ways. Brazilian Blowout is a branded system with one specific process and one specific result. If someone's comparing it to something else, the comparison needs to be precise.

When to color your hair.

Brazilian Blowout works on color-treated hair. Timing matters.

  • Single-process color can be done before your treatment, or about two weeks after.
  • Lightening services, bleach, highlights, must always be done first. Wait at least two weeks before booking your smoothing treatment.
  • If your hair is fragile or over-processed, heat and technique are adjusted to protect integrity. Results improve as hair strength builds over time.

Aftercare and maintenance.

Salt water and chlorine will shorten the lifespan of the treatment. If you swim frequently, this may not be practical unless you wear a swim cap.

Not all sulfate-free shampoos are equal. Brazilian Blowout products work best. We'll go over specific product recommendations at your appointment.

Ventilation and safety.

This studio has custom-built commercial ventilation designed specifically for smoothing treatments. Airflow is intentional and built into the space, not an afterthought.

If you'd prefer a gentler option, Keratin Complex delivers a similar coating-based result without it. Or if you're interested in a treatment that works internally rather than on the surface, Keratin Revolution may be a better fit.

Good to know

A note on color.

Highlights or bleach should be done before your appointment. Wait at least two weeks after highlighting before booking your treatment.

Single-process color can be done before your treatment, or two weeks after. If you're not sure about the color shift, wait until after to color.
