Not every failed smoothing treatment is correctable with further chemical work. Hair that lacks adequate elasticity is not a candidate for any additional chemical service until it recovers, regardless of what the client wants to do next.
The Two Main Failure Types
- Protein overload: hair feels stiff, snaps immediately under tension with no stretch, lacks natural movement, has a rigid "helmet" quality throughout
- Heat damage: hair feels gummy when wet, stretches without returning, ends look permanently frayed or singed at the cuticle
- Mixed damage: combination of both, most common when a heavy formula was applied at too high a temperature on fine or previously processed hair
- Below-threshold damage: hair breaks dry before any tension is applied, corrective chemical work is contraindicated until baseline flexibility is restored
Ysa from Milton had fine color-treated hair and came in after a keratin treatment at another salon that used the same heavy formula and iron temperature on her hair that they used on every client regardless of density. Severe protein overload sometimes takes eight to twelve weeks to fully correct, and some clients whose hair was already compromised before the failed treatment may not recover full elasticity. I tell clients upfront when the recovery window is long. I do not book a corrective smoothing service until the hair is ready.

Fine hair recovering from protein overload gets a Lighter Result treatment with iron passes at 380 degrees for two to three passes maximum. Thick or coarse hair recovering from heat damage gets a different formula concentration and temperature calibration based on what the hair's condition shows at that visit.
I sometimes book a second corrective appointment before a full smoothing service because one round of moisture work is not always enough. The hair tells me when it is ready.

Everyday Tips for Re-Balancing at Home
What you do between appointments determines how quickly corrective work holds. The home care protocol during recovery is not optional and is not the same as standard maintenance.
Recovery Home Care by Damage Type
- Protein overload recovery: moisture-only shampoo and conditioner, weekly hydrating mask from mid-length to ends for 20 minutes, no protein products for four weeks minimum, no heat above 350 degrees
- Heat damage recovery: lightweight liquid leave-in from mid-length to ends, no direct heat at all for the first two weeks
- Mixed damage recovery: moisture-only protocol for four weeks before reintroducing any corrective work
- General recovery regardless of type: no sulfate shampoo, no heavy coconut oil on already-stiff protein-coated hair, conditioner on mid-lengths and ends only
The seasonal factor in Quincy matters here. Winter indoor humidity in the Boston coastal area drops into the 20 to 30 percent range, which means recovering hair loses moisture faster in winter than the standard recovery protocols assume. I adjust the mask frequency to twice weekly for clients in active recovery during Quincy's winter months.
