The treatment that vanished in two weeks.
I'm Franny Flynn, owner of Brazilian Blowout Boston in Quincy, MA. I've done over 10,000 smoothing treatments since 2009, so longevity is something I talk about with clients constantly.
You get a smoothing treatment. You love it. You plan your life around it. And then two weeks later, it feels like it vanished.
So let's just say the honest part out loud.
There isn't one universal answer. How long a smoothing treatment lasts depends on a few real things: the treatment being used, the person performing it, how it's customized, and what your hair goes through afterward.
Not all smoothing treatments are the same.
There are hundreds of smoothing systems on the market.
Some are coating-based. Some work more internally. Some fade gradually. Some last until new hair grows in.
A salon two towns over might be using a completely different system with completely different longevity. Even the same brand can perform very differently depending on how it's applied.
Which brings us to the part people don't talk about enough.
Experience matters more than most people think.
"I had a smoothing treatment and it was gone in two weeks."
That's almost always a technique issue.
If hair is thick or coarse, was the processing time adjusted? Were sections taken small enough during flat ironing? Was enough heat used to properly activate the treatment? Or was it rushed because the stylist was behind schedule?
Smoothing isn't a side service for us. Every treatment is done by someone trained in product science, heat control, and how to customize technique based on texture, density, and goals.
Most salons treat smoothing like an add-on. We treat it like a craft.
How long our treatments actually last.
Not best-case fantasy. Realistic timelines based on what we actually see.
Brazilian Blowout. Coating-Based
Delivers immediate frizz reduction and shine. Fades gradually with washing, a lighter treatment fades closer to 10 weeks, a heavier application closer to 12. Results vary depending on hair type, routine, and maintenance. Realistic range: 10 - 12 weeks.
Keratin Complex. Coating-Based
A longer-wearing coating-style system. Results hold well with proper maintenance and adherence to the 72-hour no-wash period. Realistic range: up to 5 months.
Keratin Revolution. Internal-Based
Clean-formula and more internally focused. It improves texture, strength, and long-term hair health rather than just coating the surface. Results tend to build over time with consistency. Most clients rebook around the 10 - 12 week mark to keep results fresh. Realistic range: about 12 weeks.
QiQi Hair Controller. Permanent
This one is different. It permanently reshapes the internal structure of the hair, it doesn't rinse out, it grows out. You keep your curls, with less bulk and frizz. You can wash, swim, and color single-process afterward. Lightening should be done before treatment. No waiting periods. Touch-ups are based on regrowth, not fading. Realistic range: 3 - 4 months per regrowth cycle.
We choose the right option during your consultation based on what your hair actually does, what you want it to do, and how much maintenance you're willing to commit to.
What makes results last longer, or shorter.
Once the treatment is done correctly, longevity mostly comes down to real-life habits.
How often you wash
Every wash shortens lifespan. Washing every other day will fade results faster than washing two or three times a week.
What you wash with
Sulfates and harsh shampoos strip smoothing treatments more quickly. Clarifying shampoo shortens longevity even more.
Swimming and water exposure
Chlorine and salt water break down most smoothing systems faster. QiQi is the exception, it holds up well even with frequent swimming. That said, salt will still dry your hair out. Deep condition regularly.
Your natural texture
Fine hair often holds results longer than coarse hair. That doesn't make one better. It just affects the timeline.
Color-treated hair
More porous hair absorbs and releases product faster. Not a dealbreaker, just part of the equation we factor in during your consultation.
What "10 - 12 weeks" really looks like.
Washing 2 - 3 times per week, using sulfate-free shampoo, avoiding heavy chlorine or salt exposure, not over-processing with bleach
If you're washing daily, swimming often, or using whatever shampoo happens to be in the shower, your results may fade sooner.
There isn't a universal clock. It depends on how your hair behaves and how you maintain it. That's not good or bad. It's just honest.
Thin and fine hair behaves differently than thick and coarse hair. Most salons give everyone the same answer because it's easier. We don't, because your hair isn't the same as everyone else's.
